Ally measures the accessibility of each file attached to your course and shows you at-a-glance how it scores. Scores range from Low to Perfect. The higher the score the fewer the issues.

Next to each of your files, you will see a dial icon correlating to the accessibility level of your file.

Four dials low, medium, high and perfect correspond to the level of accessibility of a file in a course

For scores that are low to high, Ally shows users the accessibility issues found in the file and walks users through how to fix them.

It’s important to note that students do not see the dial icons. Only instructors can see the dials.

What file types does Ally check?

  • PDF files

  • Microsoft® Word files

  • Microsoft® PowerPoint® files

  • OpenOffice/LibreOffice files

  • Uploaded HTML files

  • Image files (JPG, JPEG, GIF, PNG, BPM, TIFF)

  • WYSIWYG/VTBE content

  • YouTube videos embedded in WYSIWYG/VTBE content

Check Your File’s Accessibility Score

  1. Begin by clicking on the colored dial to the right of the file.

By clicking on the colored dial to the right of the file name, users can learn more about what accessibility issues exist with the file and how fix them
  2. A new window opens with your file on the left side of the screen and the accessibility score on the right side.

An orange dial indicates that the accessibility score for a course is 49 percent. The document contains images that are missing a description
  3. Users can learn more about what the issue means by clicking on the “What this means” button.  In this case the document contains images that are missing a description.

  4. If a user clicks on the “How to add descriptions” button, Ally walks the user through how to add descriptions to their image.

When a user clicks on the How to add descriptions button, Ally provides resources to help the user add descriptions to images
