Campus Changes in Compliance with SUNY Plastics Policy

In compliance with SUNY Policy 5201 "Elimination of Single Use Plastics and Preference for Durable and Reusable Alternatives" SUNY Fredonia will be making some changes to our procedures effective August 1, 2025.
SUNY Procedure 5200 outlines implementation targets for Policy 5201. In alignment with these target dates, Facilities Services will be working to reduce the number of plastic trash bin liners for individual offices and classrooms by 50% coming into the Fall 2025 semester. While individual office trash bins will continue to be emptied twice a week as they have in the past, the plastic liner will only be replaced if it is torn or heavily soiled. Classroom trash bins will continue to be emptied on a daily basis but again, liners will be replaced only as needed. Further, plastic liners will no longer be supplied for office or classroom recycling containers.
Also, effective August 1st, balloons will no longer be permitted on campus or at any university sponsored activity/event whether on campus or off.  There are a few small exceptions to this rule, outlined in Procedure 5200. Campus departments who have utilized balloons in the past are strongly encouraged to review this information and to reach out to Sarah.Laurie@Fredonia.edu with questions.
FSA continues to move forward on their efforts to reduce and eliminate single use plastic where safe and effective to do so and is already in compliance with the timelines listed in Procedure 5200 including the elimination of straws, stir sticks, and plastic bags.
Any individual or department with questions on the implementation of Policy 5201 may reach out to Sarah.Laurie@Fredonia.edu.
Thank you to the campus community for your understanding and support as we work to achieve the elimination of single use plastics on our campus.
