Capturing Student Video Directly in OnCourse

How do I collect brief student videos in OnCourse?

Step-by-step guide

OnCourse offers the option to capture both audio and video through the use of a Quiz, Assignment (dropbox), Forum, or Open Forum (discussion boards). As the instructor you can also post video through these items as well as using the Page tool. 

To begin you will need to turn on the "Atto" editor

1. Login to OnCourse using Chrome, Firefox, or Opera. This process will not work on a phone, tablet, or using Safari.
2. Click on your name in the upper-right hand corner and choose Preferences.
   
   
3. In the User account section, click the “Editor preferences” link
4. Select "Atto HTML editor" from the “Text editor” drop-down menu to “Atto HTML editor”
5. Press the “Save changes” button

The built in recording tools will allow you to record a maximum of 2 minutes and will place your video in a quiz, dropbox, or discussion board

Increase the course upload size limit

1. Access the course
2. In the top right-hand corner click the green gear and choose Edit Settings
3. Scroll down to the Files and Uploads section and click to expand
4. Change the Maximum upload size drop-down menu to 50mb
5. Save the changes

Set up the activity

1. Open the OnCourse tool that the recording will belong too
2. Description Fields
   1. You may insert recordings into any description field for any tool

3. Assignment

   1. Audio or video can be placed in the Description field as part of the directions or as a Post
   2. To allow students to create a video inside the Assignment, update the "Submission types" in the "Submission types" section to include "Online text." To do this, checkmark the "online text" box.
   3. Students may add audio or video to their posts using the Record RTC directions.

4. Forums or Open Forums 

   1. Audio or video can be placed in the Description field as part of the directions or as a Post
      1. To create a post press “Add new discussion button” or press Reply. 
      2. Under the “Type your post field” click the “Use advanced editor and additional options link.
      3. Students may add audio or video to their posts using the Record RTC directions.

5. Quiz Tool **There are special settings to allow recording inside of the Quiz tool**

   1. Use the Essay question type to capture student audio or video responses
      1. In the quiz, choose Edit Quiz
      2.  Click the Add menu and choose "a new question"
      3. Select the Essay option and press Add
      4. Enter in the Question name, Question text, and Default mark
      5. In the Response Options section change the "Response format" drop down menu to "HTML editor with file picker"
      6. Save the question
   2. Audio or video can be placed in the Description field as part of the directions 
   3. Audio or video can be placed in the Description field of a question  
   4. Audio or video can be recorded by the student in response to the question.

Creating Video

1. Open the OnCourse tool the video will be created in. 
2. Read the direction and prepare for the assignment.
1. For a discussion board press “Add new discussion button” or press Reply. 
   1. Under the “Type your post field” click the “Use advanced editor and additional options link.
2. For a drop box press the “Add Submission” button.
3. For a quiz question open the question
3. To start audio recording press the “Record Audio” button. 
4. To start audio and video recording press the “Record Video” button.
   
   1. If this button does not appear you have not successfully switched to the Atto editor, or you are using a device that does not allow recording. Please revisit the first five steps in this document.
5. Make sure your microphone  is on, and camera if doing video and are capturing both your image and your sound, and then press “Start Recording.”
6. After completing the recording press the “Stop Recording” button.
7. Now you can play back the audio/video to check the recording. 
   1. If the recording is correct press the Attach Recording button
   2. If the recording is incorrect press the Record Again button.
8. After a brief pause, (Do not close the window while you wait) the video will appear in the field. You do not need to change the text or add anything else to it.
