Microsoft Licensing Changes - Summer 2024

Due to Microsoft changing some of their licensing, your licenses will no longer support locally installing Office apps, requiring the use of the cloud apps at Office.com

Installed LTSC Microsoft Office

For systems with Office 2021 LTSC or earlier installs of Office on the desktop, when you launch an app such as Word or Excel, you will see an alert icon in the title bar next to your name.image-20240729-150821.png

If you click on the alert, you will get the following message about your account not being authorized or something similar:

You will still be allowed to use the program at this time but in order to maintain compliance with Microsoft licensing requirements we will need remove the app sometime in the near future to stay compliant. There will be additional communication as that gets planned.

Installed Office 365

If you have Office 365 installed, when you try to run one of the apps it will ask you to log in and when you do, it will tell you that your account cannot be used for this.

You can still open files as view only but will not be able to create new ones.

In either of these cases, you will need to log in to Office.com with your @fredonia.edu account and run the apps from there which you are licensed for. You will still be able to select where to save files to or load them from.

You can also create a shortcut on your Start Menu, Taskbar, and or Desktop for Office.com that allows it to run as if it was a desktop App. Instructions Follow:

Launch Edge and log onto Office.com. In the upper right corner of the browser, click on the 3 dots to get the dropdown menu.

Select the Apps option and then

Select “Install this site as an app”

You will get a popup asking you to confirm that this is what you want to do and where you can change the name of the shortcut if you want:

Click Install.

The final step is to tell it where you want the shortcut to be placed and click Allow.
